Socks for Heroes

Good Evening, Titan Nation,
This year we have another opportunity to honor one of our own Titans, Titan LCPL Donald Hogan, as we support our Troops overseas by participating in the “Socks for Heroes” Program.

Donald Hogan was a student of Tesoro High School graduating in 2007. He joined the Marine Corps and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 with his unit, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. On August 26th, while on patrol searching for an IED, he saw an insurgent pull a trigger wire to detonate an IED. Reacting immediately, he pushed one Marine out of the way, and placed his body between the IED and the rest of his squad, sheltering them from the blast. As a result, Donald traded his life to protect the Marines he served with. For his bravery and dedication, the Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Navy Cross, the Nation’s second highest decoration for Valor.

To honor this young hero, San Clemente and Tesoro High Schools will be holding the fourth annual sock drive to benefit Americans still fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East through the “Socks for Heroes” project. The goal is to collect 10,000 pairs of black or brown cotton athletic crew socks to be sent to Army Units still serving our country for the holidays. The winner of the drive will be announced at half time at the San Clemente/Tesoro Football game Friday, October 13.

Here is a short video of how our young men and women appreciate the sock drive.

Jeff Bank, and Gregg Clapper are the chairs and they have been working diligently to ensure a successful event. Should you have any questions about the sock drive or any donation questions, you can reach them at,

You can make a donation for Tesoro at the following link:
Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Donate” below the Tesoro Titan Mascot.

In the past we have setup collection points for people to donate socks, but based on the great deal Socks for Heroes has negotiated for the purchase of new socks (especially the type needed for the troops), we are going to focus our efforts on driving donations via the Socks for Heroes website. If you would prefer to donate socks directly, please contact Jeff Bank at

A pair of socks costs about $1.00 with shipping, and all donations will be credited to the school of origin. Although SCHS already started their sock drive, I’m confident that our Tesoro Titans will show up and win the competition since we won the last three years. Let’s repeat the win again and support an awesome cause!

Please feel free to reach out to your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.

Thank you for contributing to this worthy effort to remember this brave young man, who connected our two communities. Remember, Socks for Heroes is part of the San Clemente Marine Corps Support Group, a registered 501©(3) non-profit. All donations are tax deductible.
